When Howdy and I first started dating, he would cringe whenever I started a conversation with, "I used to date this guy..." As time wore on, I ran out of "guy I used to date" stories and moved on to something even more horrifying for him, the "I heard it on NPR" stories. In that fine tradition, yesterday on All Things Considered, I heard this essay on blogging and marriage...check it out! If you can listen to it and not recognize one item as something that you've done/said/thought, you haven't had your computer very long! As Julie would say, the essay was "blog-worthy"!
In a semi-related story...you've probably all figured out that I'm a statistics junkie. I love my little maps and hit counters. I've got to tell you, since I've been paying a lot more attention where my hits have been coming from, it's really changed my perspective of the Olympics.
|
In the last two Olympics, it was all about the USA. It was only the games we won that I was really interested in and with the exception of the Sale/Pelletier fiasco, I can't say I remember very many of the other participants. This year, I am watching with fresh international glasses on. I know that I can go to my little Frappr map and see real people that are reading my words from the countries that we are playing with and all of a sudden, it really doesn't matter if we win or not, because it's like rooting for your friend's kids in a soccer game, even if they score a goal when your kid is the goalie, it's still pretty neat. |
>>>These are my first Spring flowers. (If this is my last blog entry ever, it's because Howdy killed me for using one of our Riedel glasses |
Phew! Shot of insulin anyone? LOL! On to the knittage!
There are four more rows and then the heel. It's 4" so far. Too short. I figure I can use up to 12.5 grams of pink or yellow and still have enough yarn to complete the socks. So far, I've used 8 in the yellow. You know what this means...
Happy Valentine's Day, too! Continuing our international theme, I am making Howdy Beef Stroganoff for dinner. He will be thrilled!
Do Daffodils and Hyacinths return annually in Houston? Yes but depends
on how much rain and cold we get - some years are better than others.
I think the sock has the perfect colors for Valentine's Day. I especially
like the >'s. Pretty flowers too - my neighbor has a bunch of daffodils
blooming in her yard!
Hi, first time commenter (but I'm making some lava flow socks, so I've been
around a few weeks). Houston isn't the best place for most kinds of
daffodils and hyacinths (or tulips), since most of those flowers need cold
("vernalization") in order to bloom. You can do it, but they may not be
the best choice. The good news is that many of the "annual" bulbs in
colder climates can actually live their god-intended perennial lives in
Houston. It takes some getting used to (my mother in Central TX still
hasn't quite accepted the lack of tulips, even after 25 years), but there
are really a lot of beatiful bulbs that can be grown in your new home.
Find out the USDA Hardiness Zone for Houston and then look for bulb suited
to that zone. Horticultural adventure!
Flowers from your garden in February?! So jealous! I'm up in Vermont...we
didn't get hit by the big blizzard over the weekend, but we won't see
daffodils until the middle of April...:)
It will be a month or so before we see flowers, although I love winter, I
think I'm ready for spring. I'm tired of warm days and brown earth. I
just need some color.
You are so lucky to have flowers. (I have really really enjoyed your blog
for a while but have refrained from comment..until the flowers showed up.)
Here in Minnesota...it'll be about 10 more weeks before my bulbs come out.
Here's to forcing bulbs indoors! Just think of all the flowers you'll be
able to grow in Texas!
I LOVE your socks. Here in St. Louis we have only our little Snow Drops.
The crocus bulbs are starting to peek out and our daffodils are just
starting to bud. Beautiful bouquet. I'm thinking of forcing forsythia.
We sure could use the color.
Love your spring flowers! When I travelled full time for work & was based
out of my parents house in GA each year I would always take a bunch of
daffodils on the plane with me back to colder climates & it was reminder
that spring would return. :)
You're absolutely right about the international friends we develop through
blogging -- it's one of the many things I enjoy!
Those socks are looking fantastic! Wish I could say the same for my FBS,
but I hope it will improve after blocking.
Oh, come on....I mean, if you have Riedel Glasses, then you HAVE to use it.
It's nothing to be sitting in a showboard collecting dust.
I must be the one from Sweden! *waving my hands*
I read your blog almost daily and LOVE your patterns. Have just finished
your River Rapid Socks and if you want, you can see a picture of them on my
blog.
